What's the difference?

It’s is the contraction for it + is. A contraction is a word made by shortening and combining two words.

  • Example: It’s getting very dark outside.

Its is possessive, meaning it indicates ownership. It’s a word that shows who or what something belongs to.

  • Example: The lion shook its mane.
