It takes time to achieve a following for your website. Established sites typically get more traffic, since search engines suggest them in their search results more frequently. But how can you see if your website is getting visitors, and which pages or posts are being viewed?
If you use WordPress.com, you can automatically see some of this information under Stats and Insights on your Dashboard. For example, it shows the number of views for posts and pages, where your visitors are located in the world, and whether your traffic is increasing or decreasing on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis.
Statistics about your traffic are referred to as analytics. If you want to see more details about your analytics, such as the search terms your visitors are using to find your site, you'll need to install a plugin like Jetpack, MonsterInsights, or Yoast SEO.
Most people who use WP want to increase their traffic. One easy way to help your website gain traction is through linking social media.
The role of social media
In this day and age, you can’t underestimate the power of social media. Regardless of which platforms you use, it’s a great way to stay connected and meet new people. You can promote your new website within your network by sharing your posts or photos.
So which social media platform might work best for you? Here are four of the most popular ones you could use, and how you might connect them to your site:
Facebook is a great way to interact with your community. You can create a group or page on the platform and then link to your website. By posting regular updates on Facebook and responding to comments, you can build awareness for your business or organization. To learn how to make a Facebook business page, watch the video below.
Twitter is great for sharing a simple link to a WP post. You can even embed your Twitter feed directly into your WP site. A lot of bloggers use Twitter to gain readers.
LinkedIn is used for networking, recruitment, and learning about an industry. You could write a post on LinkedIn about an open position with your business, encouraging candidates to apply on your website.
Instagram is used for posting photos. If you’re a photographer, you could add a widget to your site which leads to your Instagram page. To learn more about adding social media icons to your website in WP, check out the video below.
These are just some of the ways you can integrate your website with social media. Your WP analytics will also show you how many visitors are coming from various platforms. Are they being redirected from Twitter, Facebook, or somewhere else?
If one of your social media accounts isn’t helping your site to gain traction, maybe you don’t need to use it. As we discussed in the last lesson, it all depends on your target audience and who’s interested in reading your content.
In the next lesson we'll wrap up with a little review, through some final tips for success…
